My story

My fur babies - Pepper, Maisie and Tuala

I have been practicing the gentle, yet profound art of Reiki on friends, family and animals for over 30 years. I found Reiki in my early thirties when ongoing depression and anxiety caused by a dysfunctional childhood continued to drain my life of colour and joy. I was chronically depressed and in search of relief when fate intervened. I joined a choir and serendipitously sat next to an enthusiastic, newly graduated Reiki person.

I had never heard of Reiki but when the woman offered to give me a demo, I was sceptical but curious, and not wishing to appear rude, agreed. As soon as her hands touched my shoulders, intuitively I knew I had to learn Reiki too. The desire was utterly compelling although I didn’t understand why.

In 1991, I completed levels I and II of Reiki, enabling me to give both hands on and in absentia healings to myself, friends, work colleagues and to my beloved pets. At this time, I worked (unhappily) in the publishing industry but Reiki has a way of supporting change and soon after I graduated, I found my way into the area of environmental sustainability, which is a passion of mine. Despite the fact that I had failed year 10 maths many, many moons ago, I was accepted into a Master of Environmental Science degree. I found being a student again very triggering and only discovered the reason for my anxiety in the final semester – I was diagnosed with dyslexia. On graduating, I found exciting jobs first in the recycling industry and then designing programs and writing strategies in the sustainable/green building sphere in local and state government.

With the onset of menopause, my physical and mental health took a dive, and I ended up leaving fulltime work and in 2024 published my first book, a memoir called A Hole Where My Heart Should Be: Lifting the Curse of Intergenerational Trauma, about my healing journey. Now, it appears, I have come full circle – way back in 1984 at the age of 20, an astrologer told me that one day, I would be a healer. At the time, I thought this very unlikely, but it seems that my life’s experience has led me to this vocation. My heart is full of the knowledge that I am finally fulfilling my soul’s purpose.

Since 1995, Reiki has supported my journey toward emotional and physical healing. I have spent many hours with my hands on people, horses, cats and dogs. Our world is awash with anxiety, stress and uncertainty, yet this wonderful, gentle and powerful resource is available to all, for comfort, healing, and spiritual growth.
